Overall Equipment Effectiveness is the headline metric for a reason — it rolls three things into one figure:
- Availability — is the asset running when it should be?
- Performance — is it running at the rate it should?
- Quality — is what it produces good first time?
OEE is powerful because it's honest: it multiplies, so a weakness in any one area drags the whole number down. Track it before and after an intelligent solution goes live, and the value becomes visible.
The process-control KPIs that show why
OEE tells you whether things improved. These tell you why:
- Process variability — standard deviation on key measurements. Lower variability usually means less waste, less energy and steadier quality.
- Loop performance — how many loops are in normal/auto vs. manual, and how many are oscillating. A quiet, well-tuned plant is a cheaper plant.
- Time in optimal operating window — how much of the run sits where it should.
- Specific energy consumption — energy per unit of output, the metric finance always understands.
- Alarm rate — a falling alarm count is a strong sign the plant is running more smoothly.
The best KPI is the one that connects a control-room improvement to a number a manager already cares about.
Baseline first, or the story collapses
The single most common mistake is not capturing a clean baseline before the change. Without "before," your "after" is just a number with no meaning. Fix the baseline period, agree what "good" looks like, and hold the definition steady — so nobody can wave the result away with "well, conditions were different."
Report it in the language of the audience
An engineer wants variability and loop health. A plant manager wants OEE and throughput. Finance wants energy cost and payback. The same underlying data, framed three ways. A KPI report that only speaks "engineering" never makes it into the boardroom — and the value stays invisible.
